Why WhatsApp is where your family abroad lives

Across India, the UK, the Gulf, East Africa, and most of the world, WhatsApp is the default way people communicate — with family, with colleagues, with the plumber. An email from an address a relative in Ahmedabad or London does not recognize slides into a folder they never open; a WhatsApp message from the family is read within minutes, in the same thread where they talk to everyone they know.
